Generally industrial scissor lifts and lift tables that are equipped with guard rails must be provided with 42” high guard rails c/w a mid-rail and a 4” high toe board. The 4” high toe board prevents the operator’s foot from slipping off the lift table platform.
Removable Guard Rails: Removable guard rails are the most common design of guard rail provided. Each end of the guard rail is bolted to a threaded plate that is welded to the lift table platform. Using common hand tools it is easy to unbolt and temporarily remove the guard rails. Bolting the guard rail in place improves the securement relative to pocket style guard rails that incorporate a male / female tube arrangement.

Pocket Style Guard Rails: Pocket style guard rails are used in applications that require the guard rails to be removed and replaced on a fairly regular basis. To remove the guard rail the operator lifts up on the horizontal cross bar. The vertical guard rail posts lift up and out of the sockets that are recessed into the lift table platform. To reposition the guard rails the operator aligns the 2 vertical posts with the recessed platform sockets and lowers the guard rail into position. The concern with pocket style guard rails is because they are not stationary they could be accidentally bumped out of position.
Permanent Guard Rails: Â Permanent guard rails are welded into position on the lift table platform. Cutting of the steel is required to remove this design of permanent guard rail. The benefit is that this is the most secure method of attachment.
Access Gates: In conjunction with guard rails interlocked gates can be supplied to provide the operator with access to the lift table platform. Single access gates are available in widths ranging from 24” – 72” wide. Double access gates are available in widths ranging from 48” – 96” wide. All access gates are electrically interlocked to the lift table control circuit; the lift table will only rise or lower when the access gates are closed and latched.

Access Chains: An alternative to access gates is to equip the lift table platform with detachable horizontal chains to provide the operator with access to the platform. One end of the access chain is welded to either a guard rail or a post and the opposite end of the access chain is manually connected to a hook that is welded to either a guard rail or a post. Access chains are not a secure as access gates; dependent on the application this maybe a consideration.
