As standard a dock lift platform is raised and lowered using a constant pressure 2 button hand held control station. The 2 button control station is most commonly connected by a cord to the power unit or installed on a post on the dock lift platform.

In addition to the standard push button operating controls dock lifts can be ordered with an optional manual lowering valve that is factory installed directly on the power unit. The power unit is typically installed on the floor adjacent to the dock lift.

The purpose of the manual lowering valve is for the authorized personal to have a means to lower the lift in the event of a power failure. Under normal operating conditions the manual lowering valve is in the closed position. The manual lowering valve is plumbed directly into the power unit hydraulic circuit and when opened the valve allows the lift to be lowered when there is no electrical power present.

To avoid accidental use or unauthorized lowering of the dock lift platform the manual lowering valve handle is intentionally shipped loose but attached to the power unit in close proximity to the manual lowering valve.

Prior to the authorized personnel attaching the operating handle and opening the manual lowering valve they must first confirm that lowering the platform will not cause any safety related issues or equipment damage.
