Lift Table Load Capacity

Lift table load capacity ratings are based on the maximum weight that can be lifted with the load evenly distributed on the lift table platform. In the best-case scenario, the load is stable, static, and the load’s center of gravity (COG) is centered on the lift table platform.

Rated Capacity vs Edge Load Capacity

A second lift table capacity rating is referred to as an edge load rating. Edge load ratings are the maximum amount of weight that can be positioned on the edge of the lift table platform (end or side).

Why Center of Gravity Matters

The center of gravity of the load plays a major role in determining the correct lift table capacity and overall load stability.

Lift tables with an under-rated capacity can experience platform deflection or twisting when the load’s center of gravity moves further away from the platform center. Off-center loads increase downward structural stress on one side of the scissor leg assembly and can reduce stability if severe.

Off-Center Loading and Stability Risks

If off-center loading is significant, it may result in:

  • Platform deflection
  • Structural twisting
  • Uneven wear on mechanical components
  • Load instability on the platform

Rotating Top Lift Tables and Load Distribution

Lift tables equipped with rotating tops are designed to minimize operator reaching and stretching when placing or removing components from the pallet. The rotating top also helps improve load positioning, supporting a more balanced center of gravity on the platform.

Tall or Narrow Load Considerations

Consideration should be given to tall narrow loads positioned on the lift table platform. These loads often have a higher center of gravity, and stability risks increase as the height of the load increases.

Proper lift table selection becomes increasingly important in these applications.

Summary: Load Capacity Is More Than Just Weight

Selecting the lift table capacity rating isn’t just about the weight, it’s also about where and how the weight is positioned on the lift table platform.

Understanding load distribution, edge loading, and center of gravity is critical for safe and efficient operation.
