Conventional pit-style dock levelers store with the platform level with the facility floor when in the parked position, with the overhead door closing down on top of the dock leveler platform.

Vertical storing dock levelers, as the name implies, store with the platform in the vertical position behind the closed overhead door. When the dock leveler is stored upright, the overhead door can tightly seal directly against the pit floor, creating a more effective barrier at the dock opening.

Improved Energy Efficiency and Temperature Control

Vertical storing dock levelers are commonly used in refrigerated and freezer warehouses. By allowing the overhead door to seal directly against the pit floor, air infiltration and energy loss at the loading dock door are significantly reduced. This tight seal helps maintain a consistent interior temperature throughout the facility while lowering overall energy costs.

In addition to energy savings, the improved seal also minimizes vermin entry into the building.

This video demonstrates a vertical storing dock leveler in operation and highlights the sealing capability of the closed overhead door, which helps minimize energy loss:

Ideal for Wash-Down and Food Processing Applications

Vertical storing dock levelers are also well suited for food processing facilities that require regular pit wash-downs. Unlike conventional designs, vertical storing dock levelers do not require a lower frame. This provides full access to the pit floor during wash-down procedures, allowing for quicker and more thorough cleaning.

The open pit access also accommodates easier manual or automated sweeping of the area, helping facilities meet strict sanitation requirements.

The tight seal between the overhead door and pit floor helps prevent vermin entry, a critical factor in food processing environments. Enhanced Security at the Loading Dock

Another benefit of vertical storing dock levelers is increased facility security. Because the overhead door closes to seal off the entire dock opening, unauthorized access or break-ins at the loading dock are more difficult compared to conventional dock leveler configurations.
