Sub-assemblies are first manufactured and then sent externally to a facility that performs the hot dip galvanizing process. The sub-assemblies are cleaned by immersion in an acid solution and then dipped into a zinc-based hot molten galvanizing bath. Once coated, the components are shipped back to the manufacturer’s assembly plant, adding freight costs.
Post-Galvanizing Assembly Considerations
Prior to final assembly, minor reworking may be required on newly galvanized sub-assemblies to clean up areas such as bolt threads, bushing housings, and similar features.
Distortion and Structural Impact
The high heat involved in the hot dip galvanizing process can cause minor distortion. These distortions are cosmetic only and do not affect the structural integrity or warranty of the loading dock equipment.
Impact on Dock Leveler Lead Times
Hot dip galvanizing can extend dock leveler delivery schedules. Depending on the number of dock levelers involved, delivery may be extended by a minimum of two weeks and can increase as quantities grow or as the galvanizing company’s backlog increases.
Hot Dip Galvanizing vs. Cold Spray Galvanizing
When comparing loading dock equipment specifications, hot dip galvanizing should not be confused with cold spray galvanizing, as the two processes are fundamentally different.
Cold spray galvanizing is similar to a painted coating and is simply a sprayed-on finish option. It does not involve the extensive cleaning or immersion process used in hot dip galvanizing. The hot dip process ensures every surface is thoroughly cleaned and that zinc is applied evenly across all exposed areas.
When Is Hot Dip Galvanizing Justified?
There are several factors to consider, and in many applications, hot dip galvanizing loading dock equipment is justified due to its long-term corrosion resistance, durability, and reduced maintenance requirements.
