As standard lift tables are manufactured with straight/vertical toe guards on the lift table platform and are typically surface installed on the building floor.
In some applications the lift table has to be installed into a recessed pit to provide floor level platform access for wheeled equipment such as a pallet truck, cart etc. A lift table platform with straight/vertical toe guards would introduce a potential shear factor as the underside of the platform lowers into the pit.
Per ANSI MH29.1 Safety Requirements for Industrial Scissor Lifts toe protection must be provided on both the sides and ends of the lift table platform for any pit-mounted installation.
There are a number of means to provide this toe protection, the 2 most common methods are optional beveled toe guards on the platform or optional electric toe sensors on the platform.
Optional steel beveled toe guards are installed on the lift table platform and are tapered/slanted inward approximately 30 degrees to mechanically eliminate a potential shear point as the platform lowers into the pit.

Optional electric toe sensors consist of a 4 sided steel bar assembly that is suspended by chains just under the lower platform edge and is equipped with 4 electric limit switches.
When the down button is depressed the electric signal to open the lowering valve first travels through the 4 closed limit switches. As the lift able platform lowers if any obstruction such as an operator’s foot contacts the lower suspended 4 sided steel bar assembly one or more of the limit switches open circuits and the lowering stops immediately.
