Dock bumpers have been around for decades. They are designed to protect the building when the trucks are backed into position. The trucks contact the rubber dock bumpers instead of the building wall, reducing any opportunity for damage to the facility. When trucks are being loaded they move up and down as the weight is either added or removed from the truck, and the truck rubs up and down on the front of the dock bumpers. This loosens the concrete anchors and wears out the front of the rubber dock bumpers.
Steel face bumpers have a steel plate installed on the front of the dock bumper. The rubber absorbs the impact of the truck backing into position but the steel face lets the trucks slide up and down without damaging the dock bumpers or loosening the anchor bolts. Steel face dock bumpers are becoming so popular because they are providing additional protection for the building and reducing maintenance and replacement of the bumpers.
