How Do Dock Lift Manufacturers Achieve an Acceptable Lift Speed of 10-12 Feet per Minute (FPM)?
October 31, 2015, 7:52 am - The required lifting capacity of the dock lift determines the diameter and stroke of the hydraulic cylinders, and the number cylinders to be used. Once the cylinder requirements have been determined, then it simply becomes a matter of the volume of hydraulic oil that is pumped into the cylinders, more volume = faster lift times. Think of it this way; if it takes 2 minutes to fill a bucket with water using one garden hose and you want to fill it faster, add a second hose to the bucket. It will now fill in 1 minute. Back to dock lifts, to fill the lift cylinders more quickly, the power unit's hydraulic pump size is increased to push a higher volume oil. The horse power of the motor often needs to be increased to turn the bigger pump. Contact your Pentalift Sales Representative for more information.

Are accordion bellows mandatory when selecting a lift table?
October 27, 2015, 5:45 pm - Accordion Bellows are yellow vinyl, reinforced with steel rods, and are intended to prevent debris entry under the lift table platform. The bellows are not mandated for use on Industrial Scissor Lifts per ANSI Standards MH29.1:2012. This standard is titled "Safety Standards for Industrial Scissor Lifts" and is published by LIFT, the lift table member group of Material Handling Institute (MHI). It is important to note that the bellows are designed to prevent debris entry, are not considered a safety element because they are flexible, and are a user preference option only. Some manufacturing plants have a corporate mandate that all lift tables are to be equipped with accordion bellows, this is a purely voluntary decision made by Ford. October 22, 2015, 10:34 am - Loading docks are very busy places, with people and heavy machinery with weighty loads coming and going, often 24/7. A bee hive place such as this is ripe for accidents. But it doesn’t have to be. All it takes is for employees to start each working day with the thought, “Safety first.” It’s easy to […]
Dock Lifts should rise a what speed?
October 16, 2015, 10:59 am - The rule of thumb that most manufacturers recommend for a Dock Lift's lifting speed is 10 to 12 feet per minute. The majority of dock lifts have a vertical lift of 5’, so 10-12 fpm equates to approximately 25 to 30 second lift time. This would be the average speed requested for most applications. Pentalift can offer increased or reduced lift speeds by manipulating the flow of oil, adjusting the horse power or the pump on the associated power unit. The maximum lift speed that Pentalift offers on lift equipment is 30 feet per minute. Contact your Pentalift Sales Representative for more information.
